We can’t stress this enough—the biggest challenge for a sales rep is to be able to identify qualified sales leads. The purpose of the refinement or growth hacking stage is to analyze funnel results at each impression point to determine where you're losing customers. You will find customers dropping off at multiple points. Recognize the most critical points, prioritize and attack there first. Make changes and move forward, continuing to observe and accept that this stage has no end game. The quest for improved conversions requires continual analysis, refinement and experimentation.

Make it easy to convert. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for visitors to convert, providing as little distance and as few barriers as possible between points A and B. The next step should always be obvious. This strategy varies depending on what your desired conversion is. If it’s form submissions, make that form a piece of irresistible eye candy. If it’s downloads, make a button that is begging to be clicked.


Prospecting and marketing are all the things you do to get people into the first of your sales funnel stages. Note that stages are broken into two or more steps wherever possible. A demo could be called a single stage, but in real life it involves a lot of things: contacting the customer, sending reminders, doing the demo, and then following up. Whatever your own sales stages look like, the support you need in managing them will be the same.
